Dr. Green received his BA from Columbia College and his MD degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following an internship in medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, he was a research associate at the National Institute of Mental Health and was Director of Biomedical Research at the Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention in the Executive Office of the President. He completed his psychiatry residency and a clinical research fellowship at the Harvard-based Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1984 and was Director of the Commonwealth Research Center at Harvard Medical School from 1987 until 2002. Dr. Green joined the Geisel School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry as Professor and Chairman in November 2002, and he became Director of Dartmouth SYNERGY in 2012. He was a highly productive and active investigator, receiving peer-reviewed funding throughout his career, mentoring over 45 trainees, and was the author of more than 300 papers and abstracts. His unwavering dedication to the field of co-occurring disorders as well as his mentorship and guidance will be greatly missed.
